Three young lions at night in Liuwa Plain National Park, Zambia. Lions are primarily active at night so I wanted to photograph them in a way that showed them in their true environment. The African night sky is spectacular so I set about trying to capture a shot of lions under the Milky Way. I used a remote-control buggy to position my camera on the ground so that I could photograph the lions with the sky behind them. I lit the lions with a wireless off-camera flash. The stars are very dim so I relied on the abilities of my modern-day digital camera to work at high ISOs. Nevertheless, I still needed an exposure time of 15 seconds to expose the stars. There was no moon so it didn’t matter if the lions moved after the flash had fired, as there was very light that could cause ghosting.
